Dennis Bruce Hawes passed from this life Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at home in Iuka, Mississippi. He was born in Portland, Maine, on May 25, 1956, to Edwin W. Hawes and Germaine L. (Mailhot) Hawes, and grew up in Westbrook, attending local schools.
As a young man, he enjoyed hunting, and developed a lifelong love for motorcycles, engaging in many adventures and escapades, on his own and at other times with friends, to the dismay of his parents and adults in general. Dennis always felt “the need for speed” and lived life on his own terms.
In 1980, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to be near family, to work, and to continue with his love of motorsports, earning the nickname, “Damn Yankee.” For several years he spent weekends at Byhalia Drag Strip in Marshall County, Mississippi, racing against friends and family in his suped-up Chevy Nova, along with his dad, Ed, mom, Germaine, and brother, Mike. His love for motorcycles and speed continued and in later years he raced at Pickwick Dragway in Michie, Tennessee, and with Turnmire Motorsports of Southaven, Mississippi, developing a lasting friendship with the Turnmire family.
He continually looked for the next best motorcycle, buying, and selling, and maintaining each one with pride and affection. Dennis was an unofficial master mechanic and could evaluate and repair or replace anything in an engine, whether it was a car, truck, motorcycle, or forklift. He took great joy in discussing his knowledge and experiences with fixing and rebuilding motors with anyone who would listen, some with great interest, others who listened politely but with a total lack of understanding. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a forklift mechanic with King David Lifts of Memphis and Iuka.
After retiring, he most loved long, warm weather rides on his latest motorcycle, often riding for hundreds of miles in a day through Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, and occasionally stopping for the night along the way.
He is survived, loved ,and deeply missed by sisters Marie (David) Moxcey and Gail (Wayne) Price of Westbrook, Maine, brother, Mike of Memphis, Tennessee, daughter April Hawes and her mother, Dawn, and sister, Paige of Munford, Tennessee, uncle David Mailhot and family of Iuka, Mississippi, aunts Paulette LaBrie of Horn Lake, Mississippi and Louise Long of Ohio, several cousins, several nieces and nephews, grandnieces, a grandnephew, a great grandniece, and a great grandnephew. He was predeceased by best friend, Randall LaFrance, and leaves behind a great number of friends, including long-time friends Ronnie, Joey, Scott, Kevin, (cousin) David and the Turnmire family.
Services will be determined at a later date. Ludlam Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Dennis Bruce Hawes. You may leave online condolences to the family at www.ludlamfuneralhome.com
